Gardening philosophy
A gardener can become more like a natural philosopher, that is one who:
In taking up a more philosophical outlook gardeners not only
harvest healthy, beautiful, abundant produce,
but they also begin to participate with a real life process acting upon the plants,
and harvest insights that inform the way they relate to the garden.
Goethe took up this art of natural philosophy, and descried a way of looking to the plants:
‘Like the sun which draws forth every plant and shines on all,
he must look upon each plant with the same quiet gaze;
he must find the measure for what he learns, the data for judgement,
not in himself but in the sphere of what he observes.’
